where: a meadow in friesland NL
subject: starting anew: building a house.
description: a house is made out of construction
trash. The limitations of the available materials calls for improvisation.
The design process is driven by a method which is lent from fashion; the moulage
technique. This design method was used by 'couturiers' who made three dimensional
compositions by draping and arranging cloth and other materials on a mannequin.
In this fashion they made garments that changed and transformed the silhouette
and form of the body. With sloom 02 the method is being used to stimulate
an improvising and experimental way of building. I place a window, I look
outside through it to the inside, I look out through the window from inside.
Is it good? Is it comfortable? Then I continue. Otherwise I try another composition.
Sloom 02 is researching the aesthetics of the non-professional builder, the
so-called garden house aesthetics. Not the d.i.y. pre marketed and pre planned
garden sheds, but the improvised shed is used for inspiration.
